  • Towing capacity: 30,000 lbs
  • Pin weight capacity range: 4,500 lbs - 6,500 lbs

Notes:

  • In order for the pin box's shock absorption to work correctly, make sure your pin weight is within the pin weight range.

Fifth Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter

Say your truck has a gooseneck hitch for towing your horse trailer, but you want to go camping with your new fifth wheel. You could outfit your truck with a new fifth-wheel hitch that attaches to your existing gooseneck hitch, but that means having to move a heavy, bulky hitch into and out of your truck bed all the time.

You could also purchase an adapter that bolts onto your trailer's existing pin box. But adding a new component to your setup can keep your pin box from working how it was designed. King pin adapters can create a stiff ride and can even strain your fifth wheel's frame by adding too much height at the connection point.

A better option is to use this gooseneck-compatible pin box to easily tow your fifth-wheel trailer with your truck's gooseneck hitch. The box replaces your trailer's existing pin box, which means it's designed to act as a part of your trailer instead of simply bolting over your king pin like an adapter does.

Built-In Shock Absorption for a Smooth Ride

Executive torsion

If you've ever towed a fifth-wheel trailer before, you're no stranger to road shock. Driving over uneven terrain can result in a rigid, bumpy ride. And uncomfortable fore-and-aft chucking can occur when you're starting and stopping. When all of the motions combine, the road shock can even potentially damage your truck or trailer.

This Gen-Y Hitch torsion pin box is designed to absorb road shock at the connection point to create a safe, smooth ride. This is thanks to the internal construction of the box, which is similar to that of a torsion axle.

Pivot points are built into the Gen-Y pin box. This allows for movement between the box, which attaches to your trailer, and the king pin, which connects to the fifth-wheel hitch in your truck bed. When your trailer bounces or jerks, the king pin will move accordingly.

torsion diagram

Built into the Gen-Y pin box are tubes with inner bars that are surrounded by rubber cords. As the king pin moves, these inner bars twist inside of the tubes, attempting to follow the pin's motion. But the rubber cords prevent the bars from twisting too far. And as each bar turns, these cords compress to absorb the rough shock. This means that any shock experienced by your truck can be absorbed before it reaches your trailer, and the shock experienced by your trailer won't get transferred to your truck.

Easily Check Your Vertical Load

Executive scale

The vertical load, or pin weight, refers to the weight that a fully loaded trailer exerts downward on the hitch in the truck bed. Too little vertical load can cause trailer sway and too much can cause poor performance.

This Gen-Y pin box has a built-in mechanical scale so that you can check to see if your vertical load is too high or too low. The highest arrow on the scale indicates your maximum vertical load (3,500 lbs). The lowest arrow indicates no vertical load (0 lbs). A vertical load of at least 1,500 lbs is recommended for the built-in shock absorption to function effectively. This means that the scale's white indicator marker should be between the highest arrow and the middle arrow when you hook up your trailer to tow.

Video Transcript for The GEN-Y Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck: A Manufacturer Inside Look

Hello, neighbors, it's Brad here from etrailer, and today I'm at NATM. And this convention brings a lot of the vendors that we have at etrailer to a convention where we have their booths and their products set up. I had a chance to catch up with quite a few of them. So let's take a look at their products a little bit up close and ask some of the questions to those vendors about their products. I'm here with Jason from Gen Y, and what do we have on this display Oh, this is our executive, it's our Torsion-Flex Pin Box. It is the hottest seller that we have at the moment.

We are so excited about this product, because obviously, the traditional pin box has the kingpin connection, right Just think about a semi-tractor trailer has that, you know, that connection point with like a kingpin. What I wanna talk about is our gooseneck connection. So it's our Fifth to Goose, with Torsion-Flex by the way. And so what that does is you can bolt this up to any RV. We have two different bolt patterns that are the most common.

It's the Lippert 1621 and the Lippert Rhino box frames. Once you've got it bolted up to your fifth wheel camper, now you convert it down for the ball. And so you can take that fifth wheel plate out of the bed of of your truck. Get rid of that plate, get rid of the hitch, open up your bed space. Most of the trucks that come off the lot have the puck system already in the bed of the truck.

So all you have to do is just drop a ball in there. Safety chain anchors, which by the way, we have safety chain anchors available for those customers. So you simply just, you know, back up to your camper, and with the Fifth to Goose, let it down over the ball, which has the snaplatch technology like I was showing on earlier on the bumper pole coupler. So what I do is I simply just open it up, and now it stays open. Obviously, it just falls out, but once it's in the truck, it's not gonna fall out like that.

And then once I go hook up, I just let my camper down over the ball and it locks itself into place. So I worked with the guy that he put this exact box on his fifth wheel and I asked him, "Okay, why did you do that" Well, A, he loves Gen Y. It's got Torsion-Flex. It's got, you know, a lot of it checks a lot of boxes. But at the end of the day he goes, "I don't have to have a fifth wheel on the back of my bed." Correct. And it makes total sense. Yep. He'd tow on weekends, but the rest of the time you need your truck. Yep, exactly. This solves that. Or even, there's families that go to the campground and unhook their camper with their traditional king pin connection. Now they want to have their canoes, or their kayaks. You know, they wanna put those in the bed of the truck, but they really can't because there's a big, bulky fifth wheel hitch in the bed of their truck. With our Fifth to Goose, it opens that bed space way open. So that's what I've had customers that switch, because of just literally all they wanted to do was just empty the bed. Yep. And that's why they switched. The benefit, obviously, in addition to the autolatch coupler and the gooseneck connection is the Torsion-Flex. Again, more comfortable ride. You know, it takes out those harsh jerks and bumps. We've had multiple stories where, you know, guys put water, like water bottles, on the countertop or in the fridge. They get to where they're going, and literally when they get to where they're going, they're still standing upright. So you get a lot with this package, And that's with fifth wheel, you know, those connections. There's chucking, there's (indistinct). You don't have a whole lot of cushion there, and this fixes that problem. So I think this is a no brainer for anyone that's considering it. Fifth wheels, a lot of 'em will say, "Oh, you can remove them piece by piece." By yourself, it's heavy. And so if you're using your truck as a truck, but you still want to pull. Exactly. Great option. Yeah, and you made a great point there. I've had people tell us, you know, they need two people to take that fifth wheel hitch out of the bed of the truck on a Monday morning, and then put it back in on Friday night to pull their camper to the camper ground. You're exactly right. Awesome. Well, thank you Jason, for taking the time to show us the Fifth Wheel to Goose Adapter. Absolutely. No, thank you guys for taking the time to come out to our booth here at NATM. It's been a great show, and you guys are awesome as always. Just love to talk to etrailer.com. You have so much educational videos, and I feel like this is just another value add to have these types of educational videos out there, and I appreciate you taking the time to do that. Awesome, thank you. Thank you.

  • Recommended 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Adapter
Hey Kevin! If you're looking for an adapter you can bolt onto your existing pin box I recommend the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter # CAB-C5G. However, I do think it is better to completely swap out the pin box with one like the Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box # GY38FR. This will also improve your ride quality. These are bolt pattern specific so if you decide to go this route I will need the serial number off of your existing pin box...
